With some of my clients, I’ve seen their life progress. From photographing engagements and weddings to their babies and growing family. It’s incredible to look back at photos and trace several huge life events. Capturing these families grow in size and in love is really special.

Family photos make really meaningful gifts, too. If your grandmother has a big birthday coming up, a group portrait of all her grandkids is priceless. If your parents are celebrating a milestone anniversary, a family portrait is a symbol of pride and love. Holiday cards are another way to share your family’s love to relatives and friends.

When you’re in the beginning stages of planning family photos, several questions come to mind, including:

  • What to wear for family photos?

  • How should you plan for family photos?

  • What are the best spots in Nashville for holiday photos?

I’ve compiled answers to these questions below to help with your planning.

What should you and your family wear for photos?

Coordinating outfits for family photos doesn’t have to be difficult. You and your family can select outfits that feel cohesive without matching from head-to-toe. When selecting what to wear, use these tips:

  • Mix colors and patterns, but stick to an overall tone to make sure you compliment one another

  • Add texture with different fabrics, including linen, corduroy, knits, leather, fleece, etc.

  • Make sure everyone is comfortable with what they’re wearing. If any outfit is itchy or fits funny, your family won’t enjoy themselves.

How should you plan for family photos with small children?

Planning a shoot with small children may need extra coordination. While flaring tempers can sometimes be unavoidable, there are steps you can take to set you up for success. Here are some tips to plan for your shoot:

  • Make sure your kids nap and eat prior to your scheduled session

  • Keep it positive and make it fun! With a light and bright attitude, your kids are sure to follow suit.

  • When in doubt, bring bribes. Between toys, snacks and blankets you should have everything covered!

What are the best locations in Nashville for family photos?

Your Backyard

Many of my clients own property throughout the greater Middle Tennessee area. Why not use your own backyard as the setting for your family photos?

Whether you have your property includes rolling hills and acres of farmland or a picket fence and a hammock, your backyard is personal to you. Being in a location that carries meaning for you and your family automatically makes everyone feel comfortable.

Your Home

Just like your backyard, your home is incredibly important to your family. It’s where you gather, eat meals, and spend time together. Why not capture your family is a space that is familiar?

Whether you’re cooking breakfast, playing a game or laying in bed, family photos in the home feel intimate and special.

Shoots in the home also make life easier for families with small children. Everything is accessible should your child need something.

Radnor Lake State Park

Located just south of Green Hills, Radnor Lake State Park is a popular state park. Miles of paved roads and unpaved trails circle the lake in the center. No matter the season, Radnor is a scenic spot that makes for a beautiful backdrop of any family photo.

With East and West entrances, the park is easy to navigate. Walking the trails, wooden benches and look out points make for great photo-ops and rest stops.

Christmas Tree Lots

If you’re shopping for a tree, why not get photos while you’re there? Early in the season, Christmas tree lots make for the perfect backdrop of a Christmas card. Bundling up and gathering between rows of douglas firs screams holiday cheer.

There are several tree lots across Nashville that I’d recommend, including:
